We had a speaker in from GNS to talk to us about his experiences in the Antarctica. He had some great pictures, and then a group of students were able to dress up in gear and try and put up a tent! It was easy (when not fighting a blizzard and freezing in sub zero temperatures!)
We have been busy with creating and learning dances that represent our ideas of life in the Antarctica. Our class divided into 4 groups and we all ended up using the same piece of music. we put all four dances together and came up with a master piece!

Camp 2010 By Baxter

I jumped out of bed thinking yay today’s the day Room12 of Plimmerton School goes to camp in the Rimutaka Forest Park.

After about 20 minutes I was ready to go. I walked up into class, to see most of my classmates sitting on the mat surrounded by huge backpacks that looked like they were going to explode.

Finally the roll was done and we set off down the field to the car park. I was in a car with Rihari and Josh and Steve/Josh’s dad drove. We had to stop off at BP so Steve could get some petrol; he also bought us a chocolate bar.

It took about 30 minutes to get to the Education Centre, were Ms J called Mr Laird on her phone, while we waited we played with some Frisbees. Another quick drive and we were at the Rimutaka Forest camping ground. When everyone got out of their cars we went to unpack the trailer. a couple of minutes went by then we all grabbed a tent and went to set it up. Callum, Josh and I were in a tent and we could only see 2 person tents so bribed Carl to give us the 3 person tent that he had. Soon everyone finished and we went to get our lunch.

After eating Ms J called everyone over and told us that we had to put or jersey and drink bottle in our day pack. We were driven to the start of the seal colony.

During the walk we found some Tussock that was springy and most of the kids started to bounce on them.
“Ow” I blurted out half laughing, half in pain.
“Are you okay” Carl asked, trying to hold in his laughter because my leg fell through a gap in the Tussock and I had lots of scratches down my leg.

It took about another ten minutes before we got to our destination.
Rihari, Josh and I started to climb up a rock.
“I don’t know if we should do this” I yelled because the wind was so strong I could barely hear myself speak.
“It’s to windy and we didn’t ask Ms J”
“It’ll be okay when we get behind the rock “Rihari said,
And he was right. When I climbed down I ran off to catch up with Callum and Carl.
“Hey”Carl said “at seal’s so fat it looks like it’s pregnant"

When we got back to camp we were all to stuffed to play around, so we put on our togs and bolted down to the river to cool off. The river was cold and shallow. For dinner Callum, Josh and I had chicken nuggets and hash browns.

Finally it got dark and we played spotlight, Josh and Callum came running out of the bushes screaming and yelling because they heard a possum. When we had a couple of games some parents went to set up nightline.

I didn’t get scared but when I finished I borrowed Hohepa’s torch and went back in scaring the others.

Afterwards everyone went to bed, I fell asleep quickly. Apparently I was snoring for a little while then stopped.

Camp was so fun and without the parents we wouldn’t be able to go. I wish we could go back to the Rimutaka again.

Camp Recount by Zoe

‘’ Time to get up sleepyheads’’ Ms J exclaimed. Room 12 were Rimutaka Forest Park for camp 2010 on the 22nd – 24th of February. I opened my sleepy eyes and sat up from the warm snugly sleeping bag and saw that Jasmine & Georgia were waking up. I pulled back my sleeping bag, straightened out my jersey and pulled my hair into a low pony tail. I unzipped the flyer and crouched down on the damp grass to put my shoes on. I then unzipped the outside of the tent and bent down to walk out of the stuffy tent, it looked like a good day for the tramp, it was sunny and there was only a light breeze. A couple of seconds later I saw that Jasmine and Georgia had come out from the tent so we all walked towards the kitchen to meet the others.

* * * * * * * 30 minutes later * * * * * * *

Once everyone had gotten up we all went back to our tents and grabbed our breakfast stuff and had breakfast, lots of the groups made pancakes, ours were beautifully cooked and they were delicious. Soon enough I found myself cleaning the dishes in the warm soapy water and chatting away to Georgia and Jasmine….
After A while Room 10 had arrived to start their camp, we put our Frisbee away that a group of us had been playing with and heard Ms J whistle for us to come over. My mouth still tasted like the noodles we had for lunch, I turned my head to Ms J and listened to what she was saying.
“We will be starting our tramp to the huts soon...” she exclaimed.
I was trying to picture what the tramp would be like as I walked over to the big shady tree where all our bags had been plonked on the ground, some of us had started getting them on and testing what they felt like. I picked out my bag from the group and ran over to it. I heaved it up over my shoulders and plonked it on my back; Callum’s dad adjusted my straps so the weight was even all around. I looked around and everyone was coming over to find their pack. I smiled and thought maybe the tramp wasn’t going to be too hard, but I’ll just wait and see…

I was wrong the tramp was pretty challenging! I could fell the heat on my back and the sun on my face; I pulled my hat off my head and felt the top of my head. Sweat “How lovely” I turned around and saw Jasmine and Emily – they looked exhausted; that makes three of us. I stopped on the path and unclipped my waist belt & man that felt so brilliant. I asked Emily’s dad (my leader) if he could pull my drink bottle out of my pack so I could have a drink.
The water flowed into my mouth like a river. It felt refreshing. Once we all had our packs on and had a drink we started off again.

Around 45 minutes later...
My feet were going to fall off – no my legs were. Now we were going downhill, not too bad just a bit slippery, I heard someone ask “How much longer”
“Nearly there” Rebekahs mum shouted.
I could feel the breeze on me. It was beautiful. I looked down & saw the river. I craved to go swimming. FINALLY we had reached the bottom of the valley, a rush of relief ran over me, we had done it! I took my pack off and it literally felt like I was flying, it felt so great to have that pack off – I am never touching that pack again , once camp is over.

I went to dip my feet in the water with Jasmine and realised this was actually going to be an awesome camp, and It was practically just beginning :)
